Top accounting students will get an edge at The Leaders' Institute Top

An exclusive workshop for 100 of Virginia's best and brightest accounting students is now in development! A generous $100,000 founding gift from accounting and consulting firm Beers & Cutler will allow the VSCPA Educational Foundation to establish The Leaders' Institute.

To begin in 2007, the Institute will be an interactive program designed to provide future CPAs with leadership training and skills for a successful transition into the marketplace.

You can't directly sign up for The Leaders' Institute. Participants may include VSCPA Educational Foundation scholarship recipients, as well as students recommended by accounting educators around Virginia. Talk to your accounting department head to learn more about nomination!

The date and site will be announced soon! Watch the VSCPA Educational Foundation Web site for details.

In addition, the Foundation will offer a new scholarship in 2007. The Thomas M. Berry Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund will honor the achievements of long-time VSCPA President & CEO Tom Berry, who is retiring in April 2007. Check out all the Foundation's scholarship offerings.

150 hours is the new CPA requirement! Top

If you want to eventually become a CPA, you'll now have to sit for 150 hours of college education. The new requirement went into effect on July 1, 2006. Are you still confused? Check out a VSCPA brochure (.PDF) containing information on what's required, frequently asked questions and more.

Or discover how Virginia's colleges and universities, firms and students are handling the requirement!

Cool career idea: Work for the government Top

Did you know that thousands of CPAs work for government agencies across the country? There's even a group dedicated to setting standards just for governmental accounting — the U.S. Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

Wanna know more about what CPAs in government service do? Check out this video from the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) (scroll down to "CPAs in Government: Shaping the Future" to watch). Approximately seven minutes long, the video focuses on CPAs working at federal, state and local levels of government. They discuss why they chose government service as a career path and the benefits of working for the government.

Plus, check out a Q&A with VSCPA member Nora E. Thompson, CPA. She's the audit program manager with NASA's Office of the Inspector General in Hampton!

In the next few years, many CPAs working for the government will retire — and new CPAs are wanted. Fifty percent of AICPA members working in government plan to retire in the next 10 years. This is a great opportunity for new college graduates!

What does accreditation mean? Top

You may have heard that some business programs at colleges and universities are "accredited." Accreditation means the program has undergone a rigorous examination for quality by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Schools in Virginia may be also be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Learn more about accreditation, including what schools in Virginia have AACSB accreditation.

Beware of your personal Web page! Top

Thousands of students have personal Web pages on easy-to-use portals like Facebook and MySpace. But next time you post information, you may want to make sure it's appropriate for potential employers to see!

Some employers are using Google to find information on job candidates, or screening candidates' personal Web pages, according to a report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). More than one quarter (26.9 percent) of the organizations responding to a NACE poll admitted to reviewing candidates' information on social networking sites.
