career idea: Work for the government |

Did you
know that thousands of CPAs work for government agencies across
the country? There's even a group dedicated to setting standards
just for governmental accounting the U.S.
Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
Wanna know
more about what CPAs in government service do? Check out this
video
from the American
Institute of CPAs (AICPA) (scroll down to "CPAs
in Government: Shaping the Future" to watch). Approximately
seven minutes long, the video focuses on CPAs working at federal,
state and local levels of government. They discuss why they
chose government service as a career path and the benefits of
working for the government.
Plus, check
out a Q&A with VSCPA member Nora
E. Thompson, CPA. She's the audit program manager with
NASA's Office of the Inspector General in Hampton!
In the next
few years, many CPAs working for the government will retire
and new CPAs are wanted. Fifty percent of AICPA members
working in government plan to retire in the next 10 years. This
is a great opportunity for new college graduates!
You may
have heard that some business programs at colleges and universities
are "accredited." Accreditation means the program
has undergone a rigorous examination for quality by the Association
to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Schools in
Virginia may be also be accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Learn
more about accreditation, including what schools in
Virginia have AACSB accreditation.

of your personal Web page! |

Thousands
of students have personal Web pages on easy-to-use portals like
Facebook and MySpace. But next time you post information, you
may want to make sure it's appropriate for potential employers
to see!
Some employers
are using Google to find information on job candidates, or screening
candidates' personal Web pages, according to a report from the
National
Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). More than
one quarter (26.9 percent) of the organizations responding to
a NACE poll admitted to reviewing candidates' information on
social networking sites.
