requirement: What you need to know |

If you're confused about how many credits you need to sit for
the CPA Exam, you're not alone. In 1999, Virginia adopted the
Uniform Accountancy Act (UAA), which attempts to unify accounting
laws and regulations across the nation.
The result? Starting July 1, 2006, accounting students must complete
150 hours of accounting education before sitting for the CPA Exam
in Virginia.
Download a brand-new VSCPA
brochure (.PDF) for information on what's required, frequently
asked questions and more.

You've probably seen the challenges facing the accounting profession
over the last few years, with corporate scandals screaming from
the headlines. What do those problems mean for CPAs? As you transition
into your career, your skills will become more important than
ever. Companies will need accountants with certifications, such
as the CPA, and specialties in assurance, financial analysis,
internal audit, forensic accounting and international accounting,
to name a few. Check
out what accountants of the next generation will need
to succeed in the coming years. A Career Center and career articles
are also available at the Next
Generation Accountant Web site.

There's good news for students who want to enter the accounting
profession over the next few years! Accounting firms of all sizes
are projecting double-digit increases in hiring of new grads through
2009, according to new research from the
American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).
And those grads are making even more. Accounting students could
expect an average starting salary of $42,940, according to the
latest
data from the National
Association of Colleges and Employers.

Taxes for students (and parents) can get tricky when multiple
deductions, credits and savings accounts are involved. Make
sure you're not forgetting anything! A new government
report (.PDF) shows that one in four taxpayers eligible
for an education tax break failed to claim one of the available
credits or the tuition deduction. Read
on for more info.
